Economy

Wasilla started out as an as a trade and transportation logistics center for gold mining settlements and fur trappers that thrived in the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A government program in 1935 moved more than 200 families to the area to start farming communities.

The completion of the George Parks Highway in the 1970s, one of the area’s most important transportation corridors, cut trips to and from Anchorage and Wasilla to under an hour.

Today, about 35% of the city’s workforce commutes to Anchorage. The city’s economy is powered by a diverse mix of industries, including steel fabrication, wood and concrete products manufacturing, agriculture, and construction material distribution.
